HAGGERSTON POOL IN LONDON OPEN HOUSE 20TH/21ST SEPTEMBER

Yes it's definite. Haggerston Pool is to be open for London Open House on the weekend of September 20th and 21st from 10am til 5pm each day. The Council has insisted that we get extra insurance at this late stage. This has now been arranged, so if you are interested in having a look at the pool hall and supporting the campaign to get the pool open again, please come along on the day. We're going to have a small exhibition as well with information about the campaign, the history of Haggerston and other pools in the area and photos of the rest of the building.

VOTE FOR VICTORIA BATHS RESTORATION

Victoria Baths - Manchester's Victorian water palace - has been featured in BBC2's Restoration program. Presented by Gryff Rhys Jones, viewers are invited to vote for the building they would like to see receiving the funds (likely to be £3 million). Victoria Baths has reached the final which is to be shown on Sunday 14th September at 9pm. If Victoria Baths wins, it will raise the profile of funding for historic pools nationwide - and indirectly help us with the funding for Haggerston.

Call 09010 77 50 01 to vote for Victoria Baths. Lots of info and pictures on their website www.victoriabaths.org.uk. Lines open from Thursday 11th Sep (2am) to Sunday 14th Sep (9.45pm). The Final will be broadcast live on Sunday evening from 9 - 10pm. Calls cost 30p each of which 17.9p goes to the Restoration Fund.

CLISSOLD POOL

Meanwhile the problems with the 18 month old Clissold Leisure Centre in Stoke Newington continue. The Council have started legal action to try to get compensation from the architects. Last week's Building Design magazine featured a long list of problems with the building which caused costs to escalate from an original £6 million to £28 - £34 million. The Clissold Pool Users website - www.clissoldleisure.com lists so far 49 design faults with the building - and also reports that a new three-year grant from LBH to Leisure Connection (the private contractor which runs the pool) of £180,000 will be used to carry-out improvements and remedial works.

LONDON POOLS CAMPAIGN AT GLA OLYMPIC COMMITTEE

London Pools Campaign of which the Haggerston Campaign is a founder member, have been invited to give evidence to the GLA scrutiny committee chaired by Meg Hillier, looking into what Londoners could expect back in return for paying for the Olympics. We are going to ask for a fund to be set up of £100 million for London's crumbing pools. We will be backing this up with some of the evidence from Manchester which showed that the Commonwealth Games drew money away from local sports facilities

MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGN

We're running a membership campaign for the Haggerston Pool Community Trust. Letters and forms have been sent out to all the schools and tenants associations in the Haggerston. Membership can be for individuals or groups/organisations. So far 60 people and organisations have joined. The point of this is to demonstrate the degree of local support for having a swimming facility back at Haggerston. We are especially interested in organisations joining as we can print lists of groups who support us in newsletters and leaflets. Having individuals join is also useful though as we can publicise the number of people who have joined - though individual names will not be used.

If you'd like a form please get in touch and we'll email or post it to you.
